Cala del Mago

Discover everything you can do in Cala del Mago and Portals Vells beach. We recommend what to see and where to eat in one of the most charming beaches in Mallorca.

Located in the southwest of Mallorca and in the municipality of Calvià, Cala del Mago is one of the most attractive sandy beaches along with Es Trenc, without being as crowded as the latter. It is easily accessible by car, with a free parking area, beach bar and sun loungers.

What to see in Cala del Mago

It is also known for its “Cova de La Mare de Deu”, a cave with three portals and great depth that served as a quarry for the Cathedral and the Church of Santa Eulalia in the 14th and 15th centuries. Legend has it that it served as a refuge for a boat of fishermen who, grateful for having survived a storm, sculpted the altars inside it.

Things to do in Cala del Mago

Cala del Mago is an ideal place to spend a morning of picnic and beach with friends or your partner. It is connected to the beach of Portals Vells, both surrounded by cliffs and vegetation, so if you get tired of soaking in the water you can always stroll between one beach and the other or take a break from the sun under the shade of a pine tree.

Without wanting to make a spoiler because we prefer you to discover it for yourself, we recommend that you go to the cave. It is accessed by a sandy and somewhat rocky path from the beach.

Our favourite spot is the space of marés rock located between the two beaches. It’s not as crowded as the sandy beach and has some shade, enough for a break from the sun and a snack between swims.

How to get to Cala del Mago

From Palma, take the Ma-1 road towards Calvià and turn off onto Camí Cala Figuera at Km 14. Continue straight on along Camí Cala Figuera, passing the Western Park and the golf course until you reach a dirt road that will take you to the top of the beach. Park and walk down to the cove along the dirt road.

Tips for electric cars

If you decide to enter the cave we recommend you read the history and legend of the Cova de la Mare de Deu told by Juan Ramón Pons in Historias de Mallorca.

Best places to eat in Cala del Mago

It has a beach bar on each beach with space for approximately 20 tables. If you like to have a beer and a snack after a swim, at the Bar Cala el Mago you are guaranteed a cold beer. If, on the other hand, you prefer to sit down to eat, it is advisable to change coves and go to the Restaurant Playa del Mago Calvià.

Near the beach is also the Mesón Son Ferrer with Mallorcan cuisine and grill, with a family and local atmosphere.
